Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Ripple Effect?

Ripple Effect is built for real conversation, not small talk. To play, draw one of the 60 value cards, like Courage, Honesty, or Purpose; then roll the die to see how deep you go.

A low roll means a light, easy share. A high roll means something real. There are no wrong answers, and every share is welcome, so the game naturally moves at the pace your group is ready for.

With over 1,000 possible questions packed into the deck, no two playthroughs feel the same. This makes it easy to come back to again and again with the same group, or to easily get to know a new one in a fun and interesting way.

What kind of questions are in Ripple Effect?

Every question in Ripple Effect is tied to a value like Gratitude, Family, or Mastery and dozens more across the 60-card VALUES Edition deck.

Combined with the die roll mechanic, this card system unlocks over 1,000 possible questions, ranging from light and fun to genuinely meaningful.

Rather than random icebreakers, each question is designed to reveal something true about how you see yourself, how others see you, or how you see the world. That's the "ripple": one good story changes the room.

Who is Ripple Effect for?

Ripple Effect is designed for friends, families, couples, hosts, educators, and facilitators. It’s for  basically anyone who wants conversation to go deeper than small talk.

It works equally well as:

β€’       A connection game for couples who want to know each other better

β€’       A storytelling game for groups of friends or family gatherings

β€’       An icebreaker for hosts looking to warm up a party or dinner

β€’       A discussion tool for educators and facilitators leading group conversations

Because the die roll lets players choose how deep to go, Ripple Effect adapts to the room where a first hangout and a long-time friend group can both play the same deck and have very different (equally great) conversations.

What Ripple Effect game variations are there?

Classic play: Guests draw one Stone card, roll the die, and pick the one question from the Ripple card that resonates most, and then share the story why.

Two-card mode: Guests randomly draw two Stone cards, and pick which one they prefer. Then roll the die, go to that Ripple card, and pick the one that resonates most, and share why.

Dinner party mode: A card placed under each plate; guests retrieve and share theirs during the meal.

Celebration mode β€” everyone draws two cards and picks the one that best reflects the person being honored, explains why from their own experience; the guest of honor also draws two and picks the one that feels most true to them.

What ages are Ripple Effect appropriate for?

Ripple Effect is designed for ages 12 and up.

The combination of value-based prompts and the optional depth of a high die roll makes it a great fit for teens, adults, and mixed-age family groups alike. It does this without ever forcing a player into a question they're not ready to answer.

How does the die roll work in Ripple Effect?

Core mechanic (the "die guide"): there's a die with 6 levels of depth, each with 3 prompt options per level β€” so the game scales from light to deep depending on the roll.

After drawing a value card, you roll a die to determine which question you'll answer, and how deep it goes. A low roll surfaces a lighter, easier question tied to that value. A high roll surfaces something more personal and real.

This is what sets Ripple Effect apart from a typical question deck: instead of guessing how vulnerable to be, the die makes that choice for you, which takes the pressure off and keeps the game moving. Some of the best moments come from a high roll nobody saw coming.

Is there a wrong way to answer in Ripple Effect?

No β€” there are no wrong answers in Ripple Effect, and every share is welcome. You can keep things light, go deep, tell a quick story, or just say what comes to mind. The game isn't about winning or performing; it's about creating a moment of real connection, however small or big that turns out to be.

As creator Nicole Melanson puts it: every story, big or small, changes how someone sees themselves, or you, or the world. That's the ripple, and it's worth celebrating whatever shape it takes.

How does Ripple Effect compare to Table Topics?

Ripple Effect is uniquely different from Table Topics and other conversation starter games. Here's how:

1. Depth as the core differentiator TableTopics is flat β€” every question is roughly the same weight. Ripple Effect's die-driven depth levels mean one game can go from icebreaker to genuinely moving, and the group controls how deep it goes.

2. Occasion-based use cases Table Topics doesn't own The dinner-party and celebration/birthday modes are genuinely distinct products in disguise β€” Table Topics doesn't have a "toast alternative" mode. Ripple Effect is the thing you do instead of a toast or instead of a stiff icebreaker, it's not just another conversation game.

3. Emotional safety as a stated value "Share only what feels safe" is a real point of difference β€” it signals this isn't going to force anyone into an awkward overshare, which is a common criticism of party question decks. Say this explicitly in marketing copy.

4. Values, not trivia Table Topics leans light/fun ("what's your dream vacation"). Ripple Effect is built around actual character values β€” that's a more giftable, more "meaningful purchase" story (weddings, milestone birthdays, grief/celebration-of-life even), which supports higher price positioning.
